With so many movies and TV shows to stream across a variety of Australian streaming services, which includes the likes of Netflix, Stan, Amazon Prime Video, Disney Plus, Binge, Apple TV Plus and more, it can be tough to cut through all the noise to find the best stuff to watch each month.
It’s with this in mind that we’ve cobbled together this April Aussie streaming calendar, which helpfully highlights the best movies and TV shows worth watching this month.
As we move forward in the coming months, we’ll expand upon this format to identify a wider selection of films and TV series to stream, and include some of the top new rental releases on services such as iTunes, Google Play and more.
For now though, here are our top TV show and movie highlights for April 2022, presented in the order of their release. It’s certainly a packed month full of great content, which means you shouldn’t have any problem finding something new and great to watch.
April 2022 highlights
Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood (Movie)
Writer-director Richard Linklater returns to the rotoscoped form of animation he previously explored with his films Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly in the far more kid-friendly film Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood. Inspired by his own childhood in Houston, Texas during the 1960s, Linklater imagines a secret Apollo mission to let a kid do a ‘dry run’ of the moon landing before the big event. And yes, it looks as charming as it sounds.
Luxe Listings Sydney: Season 2 (TV series)
Amazon’s smash hit Aussie series Luxe Listings returns for a second season this month, giving us an inside look at some of the most expensive real estate that Sydney has to offer. This season, things are shaken up with the arrival of Monica, a flashy agent with access to international clientele.

Metal Lords (Movie)
Metalheads, get ready to raise your horns to the air, because Netflix’s new original film Metal Lords is here to put heavy metal back in the spotlight. This coming of age comedy, from the creators of Game of Thrones and Harold and Kumar (quite the combination), sees a group of misfit high school teens put their differences aside to enter the local Battle of the Bands.
The Kardashians (TV series)
If you’ve been missing your regular fix of Kim, Khloe, Kourtney and the rest of the gang since the end of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, you’ll be glad to know that they’re back once again with an entirely new Disney Plus original series! Simply titled The Kardashians, the new show seems a lot like the old one based on the trailer above, which is a plus for fans.

Outer Range (TV series)
Most likely driven by the popularity of Paramount’s Yellowstone, Amazon has its own ranch-set series on the way with the Wyoming-based Outer Range. Similarities in setting aside, Outer Range appears to be an entirely different beast, with a clear mystery-thriller vibe that seems to dabble in some science fiction elements. Either way, this Josh Brolin-starring series looks incredibly intriguing.

Roar (TV series)
Nicole Kidman, Issa Rae, Alison Brie and a host of other talented ladies star in Roar, an anthology series which tells eight outrageous, genre-bending stories through the eyes of their female protagonists. Roar comes to us from the creators of the (unjustly cancelled) Netflix series GLOW, which should give you a pretty good indication of what to expect in terms of tone.

All The Old Knives (Movie)
Chris Pine and Thandiwe Newton star in All The Old Knives, a modern-day espionage thriller that’s packed to the brim with secrets and intrigue. The film follows Henry (Pine), a CIA agent who’s been tasked with trying to determine whether his ex-flame Celia (Newton) is a double agent.

Better Call Saul (TV series)
Returning for its final outing after an interminably long break between seasons, Better Call Saul will finally tie up all of the loose ends connecting it to Breaking Bad, whether we like it or not. Bob Odenkirk, who suffered a near-fatal heart attack during filming last year, gets the opportunity to send his classic character Saul Goodman home with a bang – we just hope things turn out well for Kim (Rhea Seehorn).
Russian Doll: Season 2 (TV series)
Netflix’s excellent series Russian Doll returns for its highly-anticipated second season this month, continuing the story of Nadia Vulvokov (Natasha Lyonne), a cynical New Yorker who finds herself stuck in a time loop. We’re keen to see how the show’s second season picks up, given the way that the first season ended in [SPOILER ALERT] two different timelines.

The Flight Attendant: Season 2 (TV series)
Kaley Cuoco gave a truly outstanding performance in the first season of The Flight Attendant, which saw her alcoholic character Cassie attempt to piece together a drunken night which resulted in her waking up next to a dead man. This season, it seems Cassie finds herself in the middle of an entirely new mystery when she takes on a “part-time job” as amateur private investigator/spy.
They Call Me Magic (4-part docuseries)
Well, between Apple’s new docuseries They Call Me Magic, and Binge’s Magic Johnson-centric show Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty, everything’s coming up Magic in 2022! This four-part series explores the life of Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson, one of the greatest basketball players in history, whose life went in an entirely different (but equally important) direction following his HIV diagnosis in the early ’90s.

Gaslit (TV series)
Starring Academy Award winners Julia Roberts and Sean Penn, Gaslit aims to shed new light on the Watergate scandal which led to the resignation of US president Richard Nixon in 1974. The series will centre on Martha Mitchell (Roberts), wife of US Attorney General John N. Mitchell (Penn), whose public comments at the time blew the scandal wide open.
Barry: Season 3 (TV series)
The excellent black comedy series Barry returns for its long-awaited third season this month, with the titular hitman (Bill Hader) attempting to leave his life as a contract killer behind, only to find himself constantly dragged back in by circumstances outside of his control. If only he could pursue his passion for acting in peace!
We Own The City (TV series)
Fans of The Wire rejoice, because creator David Simon, along with frequent collaborator George Pelecanos (The Deuce), are back with a new limited series that once again explores the ongoing drug war in Baltimore – only this time from a slightly different angle. We Own This City follows the rise of the Baltimore Police Department’s Gun Trace Task Force, and its fall due to corruption. Starring Jon Bernthal (The Punisher) and several familiar faces from The Wire, We Own This City looks like another classic in the making.
Ozark: Season 4, Part 2 (TV series)
Netflix’s award-winning series Ozark comes to an end with the second half of its fourth and final season, which sees Martin (Jason Bateman), Wendy (Laura Linney) and the rest of the Byrde family attempt to leave the Ozarks once and for all. Unfortunately, they face threats from every direction, including the cartels and the FBI.
