Guess what? You’re going to need some Wordle clues again, because it’s another tough one. WordleBot, the NYT’s AI helper, says it has an average score of 4.5 – which means even harder than yesterday’s, and that was no picnic.

F is a very common starting letter in Wordle. It ranks seventh behind only S, C, B, T, P and A and overall there are 135 solutions that begin with this letter.

• There is one repeated letter in today’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle today (game #616) – the answer
The answer to today’s Wordle, game #616, is… FIFTY.
I said yesterday that this was the week from Wordle hell, and it’s continuing into the weekend. The run since Tuesday now reads RUDDY (average score: 4.3), RIPER (5.4), VAGUE (4.2), ARBOR (4.4) and FIFTY (4.5). That makes the average score over those five games a staggering 4.56!
I don’t have full figures for all games (not least because WordleBot didn’t start until a few months into 2021) but the only five-game sequence with a higher average than that was BOOZE (4.7), ALPHA (4.3), THYME (3.9), DOUBT (3.7) and PARER (6.3), and that average was lifted a lot by the final entry; there were two quite easy ones in the middle.
So let’s agree this is toughest run of games ever and hope that it gets easier tomorrow. Or not – because a difficult Wordle is more fun than an easy one, right?
The biggest problem with today’s puzzle is that repeated F. There are only 22 games with that occurrence, so it’s really not that common and therefore quite hard to plan for.
The other issue is that none of the best Wordle starting words will be much help. WordleBot’s favorite, SLATE, was the pick of them: it left 45 possible solutions. But CRANE (357), SLANT (180) and TRACE (137) were all pretty awful and my choice of STARE left 119.
I’ve been in this situation before, of course, and knew to play POINT as my second word. This was also WordleBot’s choice, but it was unlucky today, leaving 14 answers remaining. That’s not a bad reduction from 119, but it’s still too many for this stage of the game.
I didn’t find that many possible answers myself, but I came up with eight: FILTH, WIDTH, HITCH, WITCH, DITCH, WITTY, DITTY and KITTY. The ones I missed included the actual answer, FIFTY, plus FIFTH, TIZZY, DIZZY, TIMID and BITTY.
WIDTH seemed like the best option, because W, D and H all appeared in multiple answers in my list. WordleBot agreed: it again said it would have done the same thing. But once again it said I was unlucky.
Was I? Well in a sense I was, because it wasn’t right. But it now left me with only three possible answers, so I couldn’t fail and lose my streak. KITTY, BITTY and FIFTY were my remaining choices and once again I chose the one which ruled out most options: KITTY.
And… you guessed it, WordleBot said that was the right choice, but also that it was unlucky today. That left me with just one possible solution, FIFTY, and a score of 5/6. Amazingly, WordleBot rated my game at 99/99 today for skill – which I’m not sure I’ve ever achieved before – but just 28/99 for skill. Oh dear.

Wordle yesterday (game #615) – clues

- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was R.

Wordle yesterday (game #615) – the answer
The answer to yesterday’s Wordle, game #615, was… ARBOR.
This really is the week from hell. Things started off easily enough with SWEAT (3.5 average), but since then we’ve had RUDDY (4.3), RIPER (5.4), VAGUE (4.2) and now ARBOR (4.4). I don’t have scores for every Wordle ever, but this is definitely one of the toughest runs in recent memory.
ARBOR is made more difficult by having two Rs, being a relatively obscure term (depending on your interests) and, for those of us in the UK, by being spelled differently from how we’d expect it to be; in British English, ARBOR is actually ARBOUR.
It’s also a word format that has lots of possibilities: there are 34 Wordle answers that end with OR, and all the letters here are pretty common. That said, B is much more likely to be found at the start of a word than in the middle, and you may well have done what I did here and played another option (in my case ARMOR) before selecting ARBOR.
Plenty of the best Wordle starting words will have helped out here, although WordleBot’s favorite, SLATE, was not among them. This still left 199 answers, more than twice the number for my own pick, STARE (82). Better still would have been CRANE (14), TRACE (15) or CRATE (also 15).
I needed to work out where my yellow A and R went on my second guess, so included them again plus another vowel, O, and a couple of common consonants in D and N. RADON gave me a green O, and though A and R remained yellow, it did a huge amount of heavy lifting, narrowing down my choices to just four.
These were ARROW, ARMOR, ABHOR and ARBOR, and I found all four of them without too many problems – though I did have to remember to drop my ‘U’ for an American spelling.
I had a 1/4 chance of getting it in three, but also needed to ensure I got it in four whatever happened – which meant avoiding ARROW. If I’d guessed that and got it wrong, I’d still have potentially faced a 50/50 between ARMOR and ARBOR. Guessing one of those two therefore made more sense and ARMOR seemed the more likely answer.
That wasn’t the case, but it left me with just one option and I found ARBOR on the fourth guess.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
